As the season for motorbikes is beginning, Sussex Safer Roads has delivered the first BikeSafe workshop in conjunction with Surrey and Sussex Police this weekend.
With delegates from the biking group Dykes on Bikes (the only official lesbian and bi motorcycle club in the UK), PC Phil Barrow led a classroom session which delivered expert advice about how to stay safe on the roads with two wheels. This then continued to an assessed road ride in the afternoon, with the day covering both the theory and practical side of riding. Response from the BikeSafe session was very positive, with both attendees Anne and Charlie leaving feeling more confident in their abilities.
PC Barrow is part of the new SSRP Casualty Reduction Team, and rides motorbikes for both work and for pleasure. “BikeSafe is a national police scheme, but you cannot underestimate the value of knowing your area. Each county has its share of rural and urban environments, and Sussex has some fantastic roads to ride. Whilst we appreciate that bikers ride through county frequently, there are plenty of places where your advanced riding techniques can come into play. Having knowledge both of the terrain and how to use your developed skills in these places can be vital to staying safe on a bike.”
Our main objective at SSRP is the safety of road users, and the delivery of our educational schemes is essential to this. In conjunction with partners, many of these are provided over the season, and each is aimed at a different demographic, so there is something for everyone.
If anyone is interested in attending a BikeSafe course, please get in touch. Please also ask if you want any more information about other courses available.
