The purpose of the ‘Exchanging Places’ event is to allow cyclists the opportunity to swap places with a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) driver and see the road from their perspective. An HGV has several blind spots where a cyclist on the road cannot be seen at all and therefore the intention is to educate cyclists (who are often completely unaware of this problem) to ensure they are positioning themselves safely when approaching these vehicles. One of the most common causes of serious injury and death to cyclists are collisions involving heavy goods vehicles (HGV’s) and therefore this intervention aims to address these collisions. The target audience for this event is essentially cyclists, however, motorists (especially of larger vehicles) of course benefit significantly too.

Representatives from ‘DAY Aggregate’, will be attending, along with one of their trucks. We will also be enlisting the help of one of WSCC’s ‘Bikeability’ team’s cycle instructors, in order to help demonstrate where the blind spots are for the drivers of this type of vehicle.
