ICE Live – 2022

Organised by FirstCar and the ICE Hub, the aim of this event was to increase awareness of rapidly developing technology, improve understanding of its application in an educational setting and help attendees develop robust delivery plans to include the use of VR.

The event took place on Wednesday 19 October 2022, hosted by West Midlands Police at their Tally Ho Conference & Banqueting Centre, Edgbaston.

It is the UK’s first conference focused on road and community safety virtual reality education. Supported by Road Safety GB, the aim of ICE Live was to increase awareness of this rapidly developing technology, improve understanding of its application in an educational setting and help attendees develop robust delivery plans to include the use of VR. The content of ICE Live 2022 was designed to appeal to a wide range of professionals who are both actively using VR and keen to expand their knowledge and to those who wish to explore the possibilities VR can bring to enhance their educational work.

The day’s content featured more than a dozen speakers from a wide range of private and public sector backgrounds.

Topics that were covered include:

  • How immersive education compares to traditional flat film
  • Understanding the hardware options for delivering VR
  • Developments in augmented reality
  • Intervention planning around VR film
  • Research and evaluation: what we know about VR effectiveness so far
  • Overcoming accessibility issues
  • 360 video vs true virtual reality
  • Futureproofing VR interventions
  • Expert panel discussion
  • Embedding behaviour change science

Sussex Safer Roads Partnership’s (SSRP) Programme Delivery Officer, Tom Hart who attended said:

“ICE VR provided an excellent opportunity to engage with fellow professionals and gain insight into emerging technologies and evaluative methods. There were a variety of speakers from varying backgrounds, including road safety professionals, emergency services, and representatives from the commercial sector. With road safety at the forefront, valuable knowledge was shared regarding the application of technology to public engagement. SSRP will discuss recent advances and research findings, with the aim of implementing new techniques in delivery of road safety messaging.”
