NATIONAL ROAD VICTIM MONTH

National Road Victim Month is held annually in August to remember those who have been killed or injured on UK roads.
As well as remembering those affected by incidents across the county, Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP) are continuing to champion safer road use via education and enforcement. Throughout August, SSRP will focus on raising awareness of the ‘Fatal Five’ – speeding, drink & drug driving, mobile phone use, careless & inconsiderate driving, and not wearing a seat belt. These are the five most common causes of fatal and serious injury collisions on the roads.
Sergeant Hendey, Casualty Reduction Officer at SSRP, notes the importance of continuing work to eliminate the number of people killed or seriously injured on Sussex roads: “Our focus is to keep everyone as safe as possible on our roads, and proactively engage with communities on how to share the roads responsibly, irrespective of their mode of travel. Whilst we work tirelessly throughout the year to make roads and communities safer, there is still much more to be done, and National Road Victim Month reminds us all of the wide reaching impact of collisions taking place”.
Last year in Sussex, 1,144 people were killed or seriously injured as a result of a collision. Of these, 39 were fatal.
Alongside the work undertaken by Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, Sussex Police are committed to make the county’s roads a hostile place for offenders to carry out criminal activity, by denying them the opportunity with visible and robust policing. The new Specialist Enforcement Unit, set to deploy in January 2021, will help reduce crime on roads and improve safety for other road users across Sussex.
