Project EDWARD – Chichester Activity

On Thursday the 21st September, local police officers from Chichester’s Prevention Team were at Tesco Stores in Chichester to support Project EDWARD.

Project EDWARD, which is European Day Without A Road Death, is in its second year and is run by TISPOL the European Traffic Police Network. Their headquarters are in the United Kingdom and it is part-financed by the European Commission. The main aim of TISPOL is to reduce death, serious injury and crime on Europe’s roads.

Between 10am and 1pm, Chichester officers were joined by representatives from West Sussex Fire and Rescue and also Chichester District Council to raise awareness of this important day and to encourage people to sign up to a ‘Road Safety Pledge’ in support of Project EDWARD. The pledge contains a number of road safety commitments such as ‘Always wear my seat belt and ensure that everyone with me wears theirs’ and ‘Remind my family, friends and colleagues to take extra care on the roads’.

Local officer Jason Lemm said ‘’Project EDWARD was really well received by those people we spoke to. As a driver, the pledge contains no surprises and is simply common sense driving that most of us adhere to, but by signing the pledge we can remind ourselves to be safer drivers and challenge others to make the same commitment.’’

During the day around one hundred people were spoken to and, out of these, seventy seven signed up to the pledge at the time using our mobile devices, which all Sussex Police frontline officers now carry.
