Red X Camera enforcement begins

It’s illegal to drive in a closed lane marked by a Red X sign
Smart Motorways use variable speed limits to manage congestion. Before the 10th June 2019, you would have needed to have been caught by an officer if you were driving in a closed lane on a smart motorway. This has changed, and you can now be caught by traffic cameras.

A Red X can be either displayed on gantry signs above each lane or on a large sign above the left hand side of the carriageway.

If you’re caught, you could receive a fixed penalty of up to £100 and three points, and in some cases more severe penalties or a court appearance.
