Safe & Considerate Driving

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Please note owing to the on-road element of this course we can only provide courses to those who have been referred by Sussex Police AND live in Sussex.

The Safe and Considerate Driving Course, is designed for clients being referred for reasons including offences relating to driving without due care and attention. Clients are referred to the Safe and Considerate Driving Course if they are involved in a collision. The course increases clients’ awareness and understanding of:

  • the causes and negative consequences of risky and inconsiderate driving
  • the importance of concentration, observation, anticipation and allowing adequate space and time
  • the reasons why their own driving may be unsafe or inconsiderate

Clients receive practical, personalised, on-road coaching, and are encouraged to create an action plan to address personally relevant issues.

This one-day course is broken into two elements, the morning session is completed in the classroom up until the lunch break. Then the afternoon element is on road. You will not be required to provide your own vehicle.

Aim of SCD

The course aims to create safer communities by increasing the likelihood that clients drive safely and considerately, in line with the Highway Code.

Its objectives are to:

  • Increase clients’ understanding of what constitutes safe and considerate driving, and the ways in which the Highway Code supports this
  • Increase clients’ understanding of the causes and negative consequences – for themselves and for others – of risky and inconsiderate driving
  • Increase clients’ understanding of their own personal susceptibility to these consequences
  • Increase clients’ understanding of the extent to which other road users drive in accordance with the Highway Code – and expect them to do so too
  • Increase clients’ understanding of the importance of concentration, observation, anticipation and allowing adequate space and time
  • Increase clients’ awareness of reasons why their own driving is unsafe or inconsiderate, and encourage them to create an action plan to address personally relevant issues
  • Improve clients’ driving behaviours and skills through practical, personalised, on-road coaching

Course Duration

The course will start at 09:15am and finish at 4pm, consisting of 2 and 1/2-hours theory, a 30- minute break and then 3 hour 45 on-road driving element.

The practical element is delivered on a 2:1 ratio by a suitably qualified Approve Driving Instructor using a dual controlled vehicle.
