Speed Limits

You mustn’t drive faster than the speed limit for the type of road and your type of vehicle. The speed limit is the absolute maximum – it doesn’t mean it’s safe to drive at this speed in all conditions. Visit the GOV.UK website for National Speed Limits information.

Speed limits, other than the national ones are set by the Highway Authority which in Sussex are Brighton & Hove City Council, East Sussex and West Sussex County Councils and for trunk roads Highways England. They each assess the roads under their control against a criteria and apply the appropriate limit.

Where there are street-lamps the speed limit is 30mph unless there are signs indicating a different limit.

If you drive anything other than a car or car-derived van, then you need to know about the different speed limits which may apply to your vehicle.
