TYRE SAFETY CHECKS

Drivers across Sussex are being urged to take extra care before heading out on the roads as many get back behind the wheel for the first time since lockdown began.

The UK Government’s phased reduction of covid-19 restrictions, which came into effect earlier this year, enabled many people to return to a place of work as the furlough scheme draws to a close. As a result, people are now using the roads in greater numbers and traffic is steadily returning to pre-lockdown flow.

Members of the public have been urged to consider other options before using public transport, meaning many will opt for private transport to get around, and Sussex Police are encouraging road users to familiarise themselves with key vehicle checks before setting of on their journeys.

Sergeant Stuart Hendey, of Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, advised of the importance of vehicle checks before heading out:

“It is vital you ensure your vehicle is safe for the roads. Regular checks on tyres is often overlooked, but as we head into colder and wetter weather conditions it is essential that you ensure your tyres are in good working condition, with enough pressure and tread to keep yourself and other road users safe.”

Surrey and Sussex Police, along with Road Safety Partnerships Drive Smart and Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, are taking part in the national tyre safety campaign taking place throughout October.
